TERMS OF SERVICE
Position begins August 31st and ends November 20th, 2009. This position requires a 400 hour commitment over a period of 12 weeks, approximately 30-35 hours per week with the possibility of continued employment at a competitive salary, depending on performance.
DUTIES
Duties for this position will include:
1. Providing interactive tours and educational programs for school groups visiting Tracy Aviary;
2. Facilitating on-site programs for Aviary visitors.
3. Developing materials and teaching support in both formal and informal programs.Other requirements include completing administrative tasks associated with the educational programs described above, attending routine organizational and departmental meetings and events, and participating in various training opportunities, as appropriate.
COMPENSATION
$1000 stipend.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: A bachelor's degree in education, natural resources, environmental studies, conservation,biology, zoology or related field from an approved college or university is strongly preferred. Experience: None required. However, experience with youth and/or students or other experience related to the above duties is preferred. The Tracy Aviary is seeking applicants for an aviculture internship. The internship is four months long, beginning on September 1, 2009. The internship is designed to provide the basic training required for an entry level zoo keeping position or similar animal husbandry position. Under direct supervision of the bird keepers the intern will
• Learn basic husbandry procedures including daily cleaning, feeding, and preparing diets
• Provide scheduled enrichment
• Follow specific breeding protocols
• Learn to work safely around all birds
• Demonstrate proper capture and restraint techniques
• Observe or participate in basic husbandry training
• Assist with medical procedures
• Maintain exhibits
In addition to the hands-on training received on a daily basis, all interns will attend 12 intern classes. These classes include avian anatomy and physiology, exhibit preparation, medical procedures, artificial incubation, and how to get a job in the zoo field.
Education: Bachelors degree in zoology or related field from an accredited college or university is strongly preferred.
Experience: Three months experience working with animals in a captive setting. Vet clinic, research facility, or field work is strongly preferred.
The internship is 40 hours a week, from 7:30am - 4:00pm with two days off in a row. The Aviary provides housing and a small monthly stipend. Interns receive similar on the job training as any new staff member. This is a great opportunity to gain zoo and exotic animal experience. Applications are due by July 6, 2009.
