AVICULTURE INTERNSHIP

The Tracy Aviary is seeking applicants for an aviculture internship. The internship is four months long, beginning on September 1, 2010 (Date is NOT flexible). The internship is designed to provide the basic training required for an entry level zoo keeping position or similar animal husbandry position. Under direct supervision of the bird keepers the intern will

• Learn basic husbandry procedures including daily cleaning, feeding, and preparing diets
• Provide scheduled enrichment
• Follow specific breeding protocols
• Learn to work safely around all birds
• Demonstrate proper capture and restraint techniques
• Observe or participate in basic husbandry training
• Assist with medical procedures
• Maintain exhibits

In addition to the hands-on training received on a daily basis, all interns will attend 12 intern classes. These classes include avian anatomy and physiology, exhibit preparation, medical procedures, artificial incubation, and how to get a job in the zoo field.

Education: Bachelors degree in zoology or related field from an accredited college or university is strongly preferred.
Experience: Three months experience working with animals in a captive setting. Vet clinic, research facility, or field work is strongly preferred.

The internship is 40 hours a week, from 7:30am - 4:00pm with two days off in a row. The Aviary provides housing and a small monthly stipend. Interns receive similar on the job training as any new staff member. This is a great opportunity to gain zoo and exotic animal experience. Positions open until filled. EDUCATOR INTERNSHIP

Available September 2010

TERMS OF SERVICE
Position begins September 6th and ends November 26th, 2010. This position requires a 400-hour commitment over a period of 12 weeks, approximately 30-35 hours per week with the possibility of continued employment at a competitive salary, depending on performance.
DUTIES
Duties for this position will include:
1. Planning, developing materials and leading interactive experiences, tours and other educational programs for visitors and school groups at Tracy Aviary.
2. Facilitating on-site programs for Aviary visitors.
Other requirements include completing administrative tasks associated with the educational programs described above, attending routine organizational and departmental meetings and events, and participating in various training opportunities, as appropriate.
COMPENSATION
$1000 stipend.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Must speak, read and write English fluently.
Education: A bachelor's degree in education, natural resources, environmental studies, conservation, biology, zoology or related field from an approved college or university is strongly preferred.
Experience: None required. However, experience with youth and/or students or other experience related to the above duties is preferred.

BIRD TRAINING INTERNSHIP

Tracy Aviary is seeking applicants for a six-month training internship starting October 1, 2010. The selected intern will work under the supervision of the bird programs training team as part of the Education Department. The training team is responsible for exhibiting trained birds in free flight bird programs as well as other onsite visitor interactions. Training internships provide opportunities to learn the following skills:
• Care and maintenance of the bird programs bird collection and facilities
• Observations on health and behavior of the bird programs collection
• Proper handling techniques for all birds in the bird programs collection
• Operant conditioning skills for training show and husbandry behaviors
• Participation in an enrichment program
• Public speaking skills in educational presentations
• Skills learned in formal intern classes

Intern responsibilities include cleaning, feeding and providing enrichment for the birds in the bird programs collection while under direct staff supervision. Interns also help maintain area facilities by raking, and by perching and sanding bird enclosures. Interns are present for all training sessions and assist in the training of new behaviors and the maintenance of established behaviors. Bird programs interns are expected to perform on stage in both formal and informal bird programs. This internship includes a training project which the intern will design and complete under staff supervision.
College enrollment or completion is required. A bachelor's degree and animal handling experience is preferred.

Interns receive similar on the job training to any new staff member. This is a great opportunity to gain zoo and exotic animal experience at an AZA accredited facility.
