Southern Ground Hornbill

The Southern Ground Hornbill is the largest hornbill species. In the wild, Southern Ground Hornbills live in family groups of 2-11 birds with a dominant breeding pair, juveniles and adult male helpers. Each family group defends a breeding and hunting territory of about 40 square miles. Tracy Aviary is one of only two zoos in the country that keep their hornbills in a family group instead of a pair. We are hoping this will create birds that are better breeders because they learned and participated in chick rearing as they would have in the wild. Our birds can be seen on almost any day “playing” with enrichment and the youngsters play frequently with each other.
