Week-long Camps Available

Join Tracy Aviary’s bird experts for an Avian Adventure during our week-long summer camps for children in Kindergarten through 8th grade! We offer both full-day and half-day camps.

Registering for Summer Camp

  • Child must be AT LEAST 5 years old to attend camp. (Unless registering for Pre-K camp)
  • Child must be enrolled in the camp grade level that they are entering in Fall 2023.
  • Registration fees include camp materials and one camp shirt.
  • Lunch hour for all-day campers is staff monitored and does not require pick-up.
  • Enrollment is limited to 12-16 participants per camp.

Camp Menu

Drillers, Weavers, and Builders (2nd-3rd Grade)

Week 1 | June 5 - 9 | 9am to 4pm

This summer become a nest investigator as we spend a week visiting different birds and creating their crafty nests. Campers will learn all about the nests birds build, from flamingos’ mud mounds to tinamous’ scratches on the ground. You’ll even gather sticks, fluff, and leaves to create your own kid-sized nest! By the end of the week, campers have a bird’s eye view of the intricacy and care that is taken with each baby bird’s home.

Tracy Aviary Field School (6th-8th Grade)

Week 2 | June 12 - 16 | 8am - 4pm

Get hands-on with Tracy Aviary in this week of scientific study in the field! Find out what we can learn about wildlife from what they leave behind. Use radio telemetry and learn how scientists track populations. Try your hand at plant identification and pressing as you get to know a horticulturist. Hone your birding skills and conduct real bird surveys in local ecosystems. This is just a sampling of the fun we’ll have as we dive into the exciting world of field work!

Fantastic Five Senses (K-1st Grade)

Week 3 | June 20 - 23 (four-day camp) | 9am - 4pm

Compare your five senses with those of birds as we explore the wondrous world around us. Which birds can find food by scent alone? Who has the best sense of hearing? Meet these feathered friends with super-avian abilities and more! With stories, games, and crafts, campers are sure to love this sensory adventure.

Things with Wings (2nd-3rd) with Natural History Museum of Utah

Week 4 | June 26 - 29 | 8:30pm - 4:30pm

Join us for a week of aeronautical study as we investigate everything that flies, soars, glides, orbits, or floats in the sky from planes, kites, and rockets to birds, mammals, and insects! Monday and Tuesday campers will be at the Museum, exploring the forces of flight with activities involving kites, planes, rockets, and more! Wednesday and Thursday will be spent at Tracy Aviary exploring the world of birds from bone density, beaks, and feet to flight patterns and habitats.

Drop off and pick up take place at NHMU on Monday and Tuesday and at Tracy Aviary on Wednesday and Thursday. No camp on Friday.

Rockets, Wings, and Flying Things (4th-5th) with Natural History Museum of Utah

Week 4 | June 26 - 29 | 8:30am - 4:30pm

Flap, Soar, Dance (1st-2nd Grade) with Tanner Dance

Week 6 | July 10 - 14 | 9 AM to 4 PM

Cavorting, spinning, leaping, dancing a jig—all of these are things both humans and birds love to do! In this full-day camp, campers will spend their mornings exploring Tracy Aviary and discovering the different ways birds’ special sashays help them survive in their habitats. Campers will then spend afternoons with Tanner Dance, on grounds at Tracy Aviary, engaging in dance, visual art and drama—all inspired by the motion of birds.

Hop, Run, Fly! (K-1st Grade)

Week 6 | July 10 - 14 | 1 PM to 4 PM (half-day camp)

Do you dream of soaring like an eagle or hopping like a toucan? Then this week of camp is for you! We will dedicate all of our energy to learning how birds do what they do best. We will master the falcon dive and the penguin waddle, the ostrich strut and the parrot glide, as we chase new discoveries and make new friends, human and feathered alike.

Nature’s Treasures (1st-2nd Grade) with Red Butte Garden

Week 7 | July 17 – 20 | 9 AM to 4 PM

This camp includes 2 full days at the Garden on Monday & Tuesday and 2 full days Tracy Aviary on Wednesday & Thursday with a Friday to Go Kit.*

At Red Butte Garden learn about map-reading, orienteering, and navigation as you search the Garden for hidden treasure! Then at Tracy Aviary to learn about some of the world's most beautiful, mysterious, and impressive birds! Explore fascinating bird myths and amazing real-life adaptations through crafts, activities, and special experiences with Tracy Aviary's feathered friends. 

Please note:  If you have campers enrolled in both Nature’s Treasures (1st/2nd grade) and Wild Senses & Crazy Defenses (3rd/4th grade), pick up and drop off are NOT at the same location.

*Friday to Go Kits include take home activities your camper can use to explore the natural world at home.

Wild Senses & Crazy Defenses (3rd-4th Grade) with Red Butte Garden

Week 7 | July 17 – 20 | 9 AM to 4 PM

This camp includes 2 full days at Tracy Aviary on Monday & Tuesday and 2 full days at the Garden on Wednesday & Thursday with a Friday to Go Kit.*

At Tracy Aviary you’ll learn how birds survive in their habitats and practice using bird adaptations for feeding, fending off predators, and enduring the forces of nature. Investigate the unique lives of birds through games, crafts, and exclusive bird encounters. Then at Red Butte Garden explore the many ways plants protect themselves from danger! If you were a plant, would you protect yourself with toxins or thorns? Or maybe something else altogether?  Come find out in this all-day adventure!

Please note:  If you have campers enrolled in both Bewitching Birds & Fantastical Flora and Wild Senses & Crazy Defenses, pick up and drop off are NOT at the same location.

Conservationists-in-Training (6th-8th Grade)

Week 8 | July 25 - 28 (four-day camp) | 8 AM to 4 PM

Join Tracy Aviary for a week of hands-on career exploration! Experience what it’s like to work at a zoo and learn about a variety of other careers in conservation. Go behind the scenes to meet and shadow Tracy Aviary staff and help with projects on-site and in the field. Campers will use real tools and techniques and finish camp with 10 hours of service.

Splash and Soar (K-1st Grade)

Week 9 | July 31 - August 4 | 12 PM to 4 PM (half-day camp)

When the weather gets hot, come dive into a week of wacky water fun at Tracy Aviary's water-themed camp. We will discover just what makes birds that spend their lives in and around water so special through encounters with new feathered friends, crafts, and water games!

My First Aviary Camp (Pre-K) 

Week 10 | August 7 - 11 | 9 AM to 12 PM (half-day camp)

It’s time to spread our wings and fly into summer camp! This week, we’ll be exploring our senses, the way we see, smell, hear, taste, and touch the world around us. Join us to learn and play through fun crafts, games, stories, and bird encounters.

Parents accompany their Little Chicks for this half-day camp.

Bugs and Birds (3rd-4th Grade) with Wasatch Community Gardens

Week 10 | August 7 - 11 | 9 AM to 4 PM

Join Tracy Aviary and Wasatch Community Gardens as we spend a fun-filled week discovering the amazing critters living down in the dirt and up in the air! Explore the world through the eyes of a bug as you work in the vegetable garden in the mornings; then grab your binoculars for the afternoon to find out how birds depend on all those tiny creatures. Campers will learn firsthand how living things interact with our environment through garden work, exploration, games, crafts, and tasty snacks. Drop off campers at Wasatch Community Gardens by 9am and pick up at Tracy Aviary at 4pm.

Nasty Nature (4th-5th Grade)

Week 11 | August 14 - 18 | 9 AM to 4 PM

Gooey grubs, saliva mud nests, vulture vomit—some may say “Yuck!” but we say “Awesome!” Allow your child to join us for a fascinating week of bird grossology as we explore some of the less refined habits of the bird world, and discover what remarkable survival strategies they have. Campers will dissect owl pellets, get an up-close look at mud nests, and meet birds up close and personal to get to the bottom of what’s so important about all of this ick.

Camp Before and After Care

Campers enrolled in these programs will spend an hour at the beginning/end of each camp day under the supervision of our camp staff, providing parents with additional pick-up/drop-off flexibility. Before Care campers must be dropped off promptly at 8:00am. After Care campers must be picked up by 5:00pm.

Before/After Care sessions will be available in week-long packages. Please note that before/after care is NOT available for off-site partner camp sessions.

Before Care: 8:00am-9:00am

After Care: 4:00pm-5:00pm

Arrival and Pick-Up

Half-Day Camps

Children must be checked in with a camp counselor between 12:45 and 1pm. At no time may any child be left unattended. If not enrolled in After Care, children must be picked up promptly at 4pm. 

Full-Day Camps

If not enrolled in Before Care, children must be checked in with a camp counselor between 8:45am and 9:00am. At no time may any child be left unattended. Lunch hour from 12pm-1pm is staff-monitored and campers do not need to be picked up during this time. If not enrolled in After Care, children must be picked up promptly at 4pm.

Lunch and Snacks

All-day campers will enjoy a supervised lunch break between 12pm and 1pm. Campers must bring their own lunch. Half-day camps will include a snack break. Tracy Aviary will not provide snacks but campers are welcome to pack personal snacks to eat during that time.

Tracy Aviary takes the physical and emotional well-being of its campers very seriously, and strives to create a positive, warm, and supportive atmosphere in all of its programs. Our camps are strict No Bullying Zones and place a strong emphasis on developing healthy relationships with people, animals, and the natural world.
