COVID-19 Update

Thank you for considering volunteer service at Tracy Aviary. Due to COVID-19, we are suspending volunteer applications until further notice.

Coming Soon!

Annual Upkeep

Tracy Aviary plants hundreds of annuals every season to beautify grounds. Assist our horticulture staff in keeping these annual pots looking beautiful and healthy by watering them once (or twice) a week. This position requires standing and walking for at least 2 hours. Training on hose and watering techniques provided.

Aviculture

Help our bird care staff take care of the birds by washing dishes, making diets, helping with projects, and making observations. This volunteer position has levels that allow more responsibilities. A one-hour orientation with staff is required before working independently.

Beetle Battle Assistant

Do you hate aphids as much as our tropical plants do? We use organic and biological pest control whenever possible, and we need assistance leading the ladybug warriors into battle! This volunteer position will give you the opportunity to learn about tropical pest control, while educating guests and helping them to release ladybugs into our Treasures of the Rainforest exhibit. This position requires a dedicated volunteer to cover our Monday evening Beetle Battle June-August. The volunteer can choose a time for the experience between 5:00-7:00pm, but the time must be consistent for the duration of summer.

Breeding Season Survey

Learn how to identify and count birds for three surveys between April and July in 12 urban parks, recreation areas, and nature sites. These surveys are a way of collecting information and answering questions about how birds use their habitats. The resulting knowledge equips us to protect these unique places for birds. No previous birding experience is necessary. Training includes one workshop at the Aviary, online lessons, and practice surveys in February through May. This position reopens 2021.

Classroom Assistant

Are you a retired educator? Do you have a passion to teach in a more formal setting? Consider volunteering as a classroom assistant! You will support our educators during classroom programs like Little Chicks, Scout workshops, and camps. You will help with activities, crafts, set up and take down, and classroom management. Knowledge of birds and ecosystems is preferred but not required. Prior classroom experience (volunteer or professional) is strongly encouraged. Note: Volunteers in this position must pass a background check.

Craftsperson

Do you like birds and are also good with tools? Would you enjoy helping to construct new things for the birds (and bird care staff) and see them put to use? From nest boxes to travel crates to sifters, a skilled craftsperson would come in handy for us! Use of your own tools is required for this position.

Education

Inspire curiosity and caring by helping our guests connect with birds and nature! Aid in creating new bird nerds by bringing out artifacts, telling a story about our birds, or connecting with program participants! Strong communication skills are highly encouraged for this volunteer position. One-day training course is required. Next training TBD.

Garden Assistant

Tracy Aviary grounds are considered an urban oasis for both birds and people. We strive to create beautiful and inspiring gardens filled with native and interesting plants. This volunteer opportunity will have you learning about bird friendly habitats and getting your hands dirty in no time. New to gardening? No problem! We’d love to have you join and promise you’ll catch on quickly.

Horticulture Specialist

Are you a horticulture or botany student looking to practice your knowledge in a real-world situation? Or are you a member of an orchid, xeric landscaping, or other specialty gardening club looking to share your experience with Tracy Aviary? We are looking for experienced gardeners to work with our fun team to maintain plants on grounds and in exhibits.

Indoor Gardening Assistant

Do you love tropical plants and birds? Help us maintain our indoor plant displays while enjoying the sights and sounds of a tropical rainforest! This volunteer position will give you the opportunity to water, prune, and propogate tropical plants. Horticulture or gardening experience is helpful, but not required. Either way, you'll grow your knowledge! This position is only available Monday afternoons.

Interiorscape Assistant

Do you have a green thumb? Gain firsthand experience caring for indoor plants by watering, cleaning, staging, checking for pests, and more. This position requires a dedicated volunteer willing to volunteer for up to 3 hours one day per week. Training provided! Preference for this position to volunteer on Sunday.

Jordan River Nature Center Host

Have you heard the news? Tracy Aviary is opening a nature center in South Salt Lake and we are looking for site host volunteers. Hosts will meet visitors and orient them to the nature center, Jordan River, and Jordan River Trail. Hosts will also assist with setting up the space, preparing education materials, and organizing. This opportunity is available Sunday-Saturday, 10am-4pm. Now is an exciting time to be involved, and we hope you'll join us for the journey! Please note this position is located at 1100 W 3300 S. To apply, please complete the Individual Volunteer Application on the Jordan River Nature Center webpage.

Office Assistant

If helping Tracy Aviary grow and develop is your passion, then join our administrative team! As an office assistant volunteer, you'll help with essential fundraising and development projects. This volunteer role is ideal for anyone with an interest in or past experience with event planning and has strong organization skills. Volunteers who can commit to at least 10 hours a month are preferred.

Photographer

Are you an amateur or professional photographer looking to add to your portfolio? We are looking for a few go-to photographers for our onsite events and fundraisers. Select photos will be used for marketing purposes as well as on-grounds signage. Previous experience taking professional-level photos is required and you will be asked to submit a small sample of your work after submitting an application. We expect a commitment of attending at least two events throughout the year. Photo credit will be given upon request.

Plant Records

Are you comfortable with computers? Do you love plants or want to learn more about them, but don’t want to get your hands dirty? Through this volunteer opportunity, you will learn from our experts to identify ornamental plants on grounds. Once identified, this information will be recorded in the Tracy Aviary plant database, which will be released to the public as an education resource. Photography skills preferred but not required.

Salt Lake Avian Collision Survey

Gain firsthand experience with a scientific study that guides action for the safety of wild, migratory birds. Many of these birds migrate at night, when skies are calmer, and the temperatures are cooler. Artificial light at night from buildings can make the night sky difficult for these birds to navigate. The Salt Lake Avian Collision Survey is a study that recruits the help of volunteers to look for birds in the early mornings that were affected by light pollution. Volunteers join a bird expert for an hour-long survey of a downtown Salt Lake City block to record any signs of light pollution impact. Surveys take place between Wednesday – Saturday in March through May. Volunteers pick and choose when they can walk with us. Learn more information here.

Special Events

Help make Tracy Aviary-wide events a success for guests of all ages. These volunteers assist with activities, crafts, and guest interactions during special events like Urban Bird Festival, International Vulture Awareness Day, Halloween Hoot, and more!
