Annual Upkeep

Tracy Aviary plants hundreds of annuals every season to beautify grounds. Assist our horticulture staff in keeping these annual pots looking beautiful and healthy by watering them once (or twice) a week. This position requires standing and walking for at least 2 hours. Training on hose and watering techniques provided.

Aviculture

Help our bird care staff take care of the birds by washing dishes, making diets, helping with projects, and making observations. This volunteer position has levels that allow more responsibilities, including working with birds at the keeper’s discretion, and independence as you move up.

Citizen Science

Help our team of citizen scientists conduct non-breeding bird surveys at study sites throughout Salt Lake County. These surveys generate information about local birds and their habitats, and help guide bird-friendly restoration and habitat management. Learn more about ongoing projects here.

Craftsperson

Do you like birds and are also good with tools? Would you enjoy helping to construct new things for the birds (and bird care staff) and see them put to use? From nest boxes to travel crates to sifters, a skilled craftsperson would come in handy for us! Use of your own tools is required for this position.

Education

Inspire curiosity and caring by helping our guests connect with birds and nature! Aid in creating new bird nerds by bringing out artifacts, telling a story about our birds, or connecting with program participants! Strong communication skills are highly encouraged for this volunteer position. One-day training course is required. Next training TBD.

Garden Assistant

Tracy Aviary grounds are considered an urban oasis for both birds and people. We strive to create beautiful and inspiring gardens filled with native and interesting plants. This volunteer opportunity will have you learning about bird friendly habitats and getting your hands dirty in no time. New to gardening? No problem! We’d love to have you join and promise you’ll catch on quickly.

Horticulture Specialist

Are you a horticulture or botany student looking to practice your knowledge in a real-world situation? Or are you a member of an orchid, xeric landscaping, or other specialty gardening club looking to share your experience with Tracy Aviary? We are looking for experienced gardeners to work with our fun team to maintain plants on grounds and in exhibits.

Indoor Gardening Assistant

Do you love tropical plants and birds? Help us maintain our indoor plant displays while enjoying the sights and sounds of a tropical rainforest! This volunteer position will give you the opportunity to water, prune, and propogate tropical plants. Horticulture or gardening experience is helpful, but not required. Either way, you'll grow your knowledge!

Office Assistant

If helping Tracy Aviary grow and develop is your passion, then join our administrative team! As an office assistant volunteer, you'll help with essential fundraising and development projects. This volunteer role is ideal for anyone with an interest in or past experience with event planning and has strong organization skills. Volunteers who can commit to at least 10 hours a month are preferred.

Plant Records

Are you comfortable with computers? Do you love plants or want to learn more about them, but don’t want to get your hands dirty? Through this volunteer opportunity, you will learn from our experts to identify ornamental plants on grounds. Once identified, this information will be recorded in the Tracy Aviary plant database, which will be released to the public as an education resource. Photography skills preferred but not required.

Special Events

Help make Tracy Aviary-wide events a success for guests of all ages. These volunteers assist with activities, crafts, and guest interactions during special events like Urban Bird Festival, International Vulture Awareness Day, Halloween Hoot, and more!

This position requires a dedicated volunteer to cover our Monday evening (6pm) Beetle Battle June-August.

Are you a retired educator? Do you have a passion to teach in a more formal setting? Consider volunteering as a classroom assistant! You will support our educators during classroom programs like Little Chicks, Scout workshops, and camps. You will help with activities, crafts, set up and take down, and classroom management. Knowledge of birds and ecosystems is preferred but not required. Prior classroom experience (volunteer or professional) is strongly encouraged. Note: Volunteers in this position must pass a background check.

We are looking for a few go-to photographers for our onsite events and fundraisers. Select photos will be used for marketing purposes as well as on-grounds signage. We expect a commitment of attending at least two events throughout the year. Photo credit will be given upon request.

Snow Removal

Do you love the snow? We, and the birds, do too but we spend a lot of time removing snow from sidewalks and paths to ensure a safe visit for all of our guests! When winter comes around we could use some help shoveling. Opportunities available at first snow fall 2018!
