Job Summary: Tracy Aviary’s Conservation Science Program helps conserve birds and their habitats through community science. Focusing on key local habitats and pressing regional conservation issues, our goals are to gather novel information about local avian ecology, inform habitat restoration and stewardship, and engage a diverse community in scientific data collection. Tracy Aviary’s Conservation Science Program is seeking a Conservation Outreach Biologist who will help grow and diversify our community science program and work collaboratively with Tracy Aviary’s Education Department to help develop, coordinate, and lead bilingual (Spanish/English) outreach activities.

Tracy Aviary (www.tracyaviary.org) is an AZA-accredited institution located on eight acres in the heart of Salt Lake City, UT. In early 2020, we opened Tracy Aviary’s second campus, the Jordan River Nature Center (undefined), which furthers our mission to inspire curiosity and caring for birds and nature through education and conservation.

Currently, Tracy Aviary Conservation staff members are working remotely, and engaging in socially-distanced small group activities in the field. When safe to do so, the Conservation Outreach Biologist will split his/her/their office time between workstations at Tracy Aviary and the Jordan River Nature Center.

Primary Duties:

  • Broaden and diversify the audiences reached through Tracy Aviary’s community science and outreach activities
  • Coordinate and lead regular bilingual (Spanish/English) bird walks and outreach programs at the Jordan River Nature Center and other sites in the region
  • Help promote the Conservation Science Program: attend tabling events and facilitate workshops, engage in media communications, develop social media posts, blogs, and newsletter content
  • Work collaboratively with Tracy Aviary’s Education Department in developing and/or enhancing education and outreach programs with conservation messaging
  • Conduct volunteer recruitment, scheduling, and coordination for community science trainings and surveys, participate in the Aviary’s internal Volunteer Committee
  • Assist in trainings and the creation of training resources for community science projects
  • Assist in the creation of Spanish-language outreach materials for Tracy Aviary and the Jordan River Nature Center

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree or higher with a major in conservation science, wildlife biology, ecology, environmental education, or related field
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to engage with diverse audiences
  • Experience in science communication and outreach
  • Ability to identify birds of the region by sight and sound, and experience conducting field research
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Willingness to work irregular hours, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends
  • Outgoing personality; comfortable speaking with members of the public
  • Strong work ethic and ability to accomplish tasks independently
  • Bilingual, English/Spanish

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in conservation science, wildlife biology, ecology, environmental education, or related field
  • Experience promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in conservation activities
  • Experience implementing community science projects
  • Grant-writing experience
  • Graphic design and video editing knowledge

Salary: $37,500-$40,000

Job Status: Salaried, Full Time

Start Date: September or October 2020

Reporting Relationship: Supervised and managed by the Director of Conservation
