Let’s Go Botanize Together

Join Tracy Aviary’s Horticulture and Conservation teams on a friendly walk for LGBTQ+ folks and allies through Utah’s stunning natural ecosystems, learning about native plants, pollinators, and wildlife!

This event will be held July 20th at the White Pine Trailhead in Little Cottonwood Canyon, along the bank of Little Cottonwood Creek and eventually getting near Gloria Falls. We will meet at 9 A.M. sharp, and return to our vehicles by 12 P.M.

This will be a moderate 1-2 mile walk, with both full sun and intermittent shade. Frequent stops and some incline is to be expected, although it is a heavily trafficked, well maintained trail. Pit toilets are available at the Trailhead. Mornings in the mountains can be chilly, and quickly heat up as the sun rises, and weather can rapidly change. Elevation and UV radiation can be intense for those who are not acclimated to these conditions. Please dress for conditions, and wear appropriate shoes (close toed, arch/ankle support, and mud-positive). Bring your preferred form of sun protection, a water bottle, and trail snacks. There is a large parking lot at the trailhead, and ample parking off the street – watch for traffic!

Frequently pausing to admire the summer wildflowers is to be expected. Botanizers are welcome to split off at the end of the walk to expand their adventure into the mountains, but please check in with a host before leaving the group. Remember to recreate responsible, and Leave No Trace. There are numerous sensitive habits immediately off the trail, and it is especially important to be conscious about staying on the path. This trail is particularly known for various species of native orchids, and other interesting mesic plants!
