SUMMARY:First Friday Fono
DESCRIPTION:Join us for First Friday Fono. In these monthly meetings we will be discussing many of the legends of the Pacific Islands and other important subjects. \nOur discussions take place around a bowl of kava. Kava is a non alcoholic drink consumed throughout the Pacific in ceremonial and social settings. It is made from the roots of the piper methysticum plant. It can bring relief to anxiety\, mood swings and more. It is also known as the “drink of peace” because of it’s ability to relieve stress and reduce anxiety\, promotor relaxation\, and being mental clarity all without creating dependency. Because of these properties many difficult discussions could take place around a bowl of kava while still maintaining peace. \nThis program is being offered free of charge\, but if you have the means and are able to make a donation of any amount that is greatly appreciated. If your circumstances allow\, we recommend a donation of $5 or $10. DESCRIPTION:Join us on February 7th for a FREE conservation and art workshop led by Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge staff from 10am to 11am! We will learn about wetland conservation and waterfowl; all supplies and materials will be provided. \nWhat is the Junior Duck Stamp program?\nAfter learning about ducks\, geese\, or swans\, students draw\, paint\, or sketch their favorite waterfowl species. The winning artwork from the national Junior Duck Stamp art contest serves as the design for the Junior Duck Stamp\, a $5 stamp produced by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service that is sold around the nation. All of the proceeds from stamp sales goes to supporting environmental education activities for students. \nWho is eligible to participate?\nAny K-12 students in public\, private\, or homeschools in Utah can participate in the competition. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a casual\, guided bird walk especially for LGBTQIA+ folks and our allies. This program is made for adults to connect with each other and the incredible birds who call the Pia Okwai/Jordan River home. \nLEARN MORE \nLet’s Go Birding Together meets every last Sunday of each month at 9 a.m. Meeting locations vary.  \nNo bird watching experience? No problem! Our educators and conservation scientists are experienced bird nerds and will help you spot and identify birds along the trail. We’ll even have freshly-sanitized binoculars and bird guides for you to borrow (Thanks\, Utah Division of Arts & Museums\, for funding these tools!). \nREGISTER HERE

DESCRIPTION:Looking to know more on providing the best environment for local birds? This is the series for you! \nEach session covers a different aspect related to feeding backyard birds. This course looks at bird identification\, best feeders and bird food\, water features\, native plantings and landscaping for birds and feeder placement for optimal viewing and bird safety. Participants will also learn about reporting your bird observations to expand the knowledge base of bird populations. \nSession topics: \n\nJanuary 31                       Best feeders and food for your birds\nFebruary 14                     Native plants for native birds and solving problems at the feeders\nFebruary 28                     Birding with a Purpose: explore community science opportunities\n\nClass will be located at the Bird Blind! Please RSVP to confirm your attendance. \nRSVP \nBio: Jeanne Le Ber is a retired health sciences librarian who has been birding since 1980. Jeanne\, along with her partner Ray\, volunteers at the Tracy Aviary in Liberty Park and at Pia Okwai cleaning and filling their bird feeders on a regular basis. Jeanne teaches for Osher\, a lifelong learning program for adults 50 and older hosted at the University of Utah.
