Learn More About Indigenous Names on Maps and Signs at Tracy Aviary and the Nature Center at Pia Okwai

Over the past couple of years, Arcia Tecun has partnered with Tracy Aviary, UVU Students, and Tribal Nations, creating a welcome sign and map which includes Indigenous names for places, mammals, birds, and fish. You can now view this sign at the Nature Center at Pia Okwai, or purchase a poster version of this map during your next visit, featuring Newe (Shoshone; Goshute) names for places, waters, mammals, birds, plants, and more.
This project extends from previous research and public communication work, in the hopes of amplifying Indigenous ecological knowledge. To complete this project, the Confederated Tribes of the Goshute Reservation and the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation have generously shared their knowledge. The different spellings found on the map honor each unique expression between these closely related groups and languages. In some cases, there are multiple names for the same water, demonstrating the complexity of relations to individual places. It is exciting to make this information more widely known in order to continue to support Indigenous knowledge and sovereignty, as well as ancestral wisdom.

Arcia Tecun ha estado trabajando con Tracy Aviary, estudiantes de la Universidad del Valle de Yuta (Utah Valley University; UVU), y Naciones de Pueblos Originarios en los últimos años para crear juntos un cartel de bienvenida y un mapa cual incluye nombres Indígenas para lugares, mamíferos, pájaros, y pescados.
Ahora puedes ver este cartel en el Nature Center en Pia Okwai durante su siguiente visita. Adicionalmente, ahora hay una versión en póster de este mapa, incluyendo nombres Newe (Shoshone; Goshute) para lugares, aguas, mamíferos, pájaros, plantas, y más. Este proyecto se extiende de investigación previa y trabajo de comunidad público para amplificar conocimiento ecológico Indígena. Para completar este proyecto, los Confederated Tribes of the Goshute Reservation (Tribus Confederadas de la Reserva Goshute) y los Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation (la Banda Noroeste de la Sede Nación Shoshone) generosamente compartieron su conocimiento.
