🌟 Winter Solstice Spotlight: Danza Azteca 🌟

From Mexico, to Utah, to California and all throughout the Northwest, Aztec Dance Captain Jose Carlos leads his family and Woodburn community in the Azteca arts. The danza azteca group, Huitilocphtli (translated from Nahuatl:“Hummingbird to the left” or “Strength of your will”) shares ancient stories left by their indigenous Mexican ancestors. Dancers spin, crouch and jump, shaking their ayoyote rattles to a rhythm and tempo set by the huehuetl drums. In a beautiful fusion of feathers, beaded regalia, movement and pre-hispanic music, the danza azteca takes you on a journey 1,000 years back to indigenous Mexico.

Desde México hasta Utah, California y todo el noroeste, el capitán de danza azteca José Carlos lidera a su familia y a la comunidad de Woodburn en las artes aztecas. El grupo de danza azteca Huitilocphtli (traducido del náhuatl como «colibrí a la izquierda» o «fuerza de tu voluntad») comparte historias antiguas legadas por sus antepasados indígenas mexicanos. Los bailarines giran, se agachan y saltan, agitando sus sonajeros de ayoyote al ritmo y tempo marcados por los tambores huehuetl. En una hermosa fusión de plumas, atuendos con abalorios, movimiento y música prehispánica, la danza azteca le lleva a un viaje 1000 años atrás, al México indígena.

Jake Fitisemanu (he/him) | Sāmoana Integrated Learning Initiative

Join Samoan chief and community leader Laufou Jake Fitisemanu for an interactive learning experience centered on the indigenous Samoan lunar month of Taumafamua, a season of traditional celebration marked by the rising of the Matali`i star cluster (Pleiades) and the winter solstice. Participants will explore constellations in our Utah sky, observe a kava preparation ceremony, and learn about Utah`s vibrant Pacific Islander communities!

Únase al líder samoano y líder comunitario Laufou Jake Fitisemanu para disfrutar de una experiencia de aprendizaje interactiva centrada en el mes lunar indígena samoano de Taumafamua, una temporada de celebración tradicional marcada por el surgimiento del cúmulo estelar Matali`i (Pléyades) y el solsticio de invierno. Los participantes explorarán las constelaciones del cielo de Utah, observarán una ceremonia de preparación de kava y aprenderán sobre las vibrantes comunidades de isleños del Pacífico de Utah.
