Family Volunteers

Family Volunteer Opportunities open the doors to volunteerism for youth 5-15 years of age. We ask that an adult always accompanies, and assists, the child during the volunteer shift.

We would like to thank The Salt Project for highlighting our Family Volunteer Program. You can read their article here!

Our application process has closed. Please check back Spring 2019 for opportunities!

Adopt-a-Spot

Through this opportunity your family adopts a spot of Tracy Aviary's grounds to keep tidy and clean. Because our facility is primarily outdoors, signs get dirty easily and sticks fall to the sidewalks and lawns. We  provide buckets, brushes, and sponges so you can wash the signs and pick up any debris you find in your area. Can you ask for a better view while cleaning than one of birds from around the world? We ask that your family commit to volunteering in your area 2-4 times per month May-August. Off-season opportunities available upon request.

Adopt-a-Garden

Did you know that Tracy Aviary is also a certified public botanic garden? Caring for our grounds is no easy task and some garden beds rich with plant diversity need a lot more attention than our staff alone can provide. Come join them in maintaining some of our more special garden beds. Weekly commitment is preferred but not required. A limited number of Monday evening (5:00-8:00pm) opportunities available.

Enrichment

Keeping our birds healthy means taking care of their minds as well as their bodies, so we provide enrichment items like toys, cardboard boxes, and paper. Bird Care staff could use your help in building creative enrichment, decorating boxes, or making paper chains. There is no guarantee that you will watch the birds interact with the enrichment you provide, but occasional exceptions may be made. Some materials may be provided, but consider items from your home donations to Tracy Aviary. Family groups may bring materials and work on grounds or enrichment can be made at home and dropped off at Tracy Aviary.

Window Washing

Smudges, fingerprints, and dirt – oh my! Windows and doors to exhibit spaces get dirty quick here at Tracy Aviary so we’re looking for a couple of dedicated family groups to wash windows. Don’t worry because entertainment abounds in this assignment! While you wash windows you can take in the playful behaviors of the kea, listen for the laughing kookaburra, and watch the toco toucans. Weekly commitment is preferred but not required.
