Tracy Aviary and Great Salt Lake Audubon are partnering to host the first annual Bird-Friendly Communities Festival, which will take place at Tracy Aviary’s Nature Center at Pia Okwai from 10am-4pm on Saturday, October 5th, 2024. This free event will have food trucks, bird and garden walks, informational tables, workshops, and activities the whole family will enjoy.
“This event will be a wonderful opportunity to learn about simple ways you can make your home and yard safer and more inviting for our local birds,” said Angie Trumbo, Tracy Aviary’s Director of Conservation.
The festival is scheduled at the peak of fall bird migration, a time when birds are especially vulnerable to the hazards of the built environment. Participants will learn from local experts about how to make their home and neighborhoods safer and more welcoming to birds through educational and hands-on activities. Topics will include creating a welcoming and safe backyard for birds, bird feeding, bird-friendly glass and building design, dark skies, and native plants.
Kids of all ages will be able to make their own pinecone bird feeder, cut out window clings, and go on a scavenger hunt around the nature center. Information tables throughout the festival will explore topics from making a “catio” for your indoor cat, to designing the perfect bird feeder setup.
This educational, family-friendly event is open to the general public. While the festival is free, participants are encouraged to RSVP beforehand.
