LATINO CONSERVATION WEEK IN UTAH
Tracy Aviary is proud to join a team of amazing organizations throughout Utah to celebrate Latino Conservation Week 2024!
This week-long national celebration is dedicated to supporting and celebrating the Latinx community’s connection to the outdoors and natural resource conservation.
TRACY AVIARY EVENTS
SATURDAY, SEPT. 14. 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. at Tracy Aviary’s Nature Center at Pia Okwai
Educational walk to interact with our native flora and fauna. We’ll discuss the importance of the Jordan river and its intertwined relationship with us. Learn about the birds, examine the plants, and make some memories! No experience needed. We will provide binoculars and bird guides.
TUESDAY, SEPT. 17. 6 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. at Tracy Aviary in Liberty Park
Come celebrate Latino Conservation Week at Tracy Aviary! Una noche GRATIS para la comunidad Latina featuring: tours of bird exhibits, art activities, and tables by our partner organizations!
WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 18. 4 P.m. – 7:00 p.m. Tracy Aviary’s Nature Center at Pia Okwai
Join Tracy Aviary & the Jordan River Commission for a canoe trip! Learn about environmental conservation and visit the Jordan River Nature Center. All gear is provided.

6-8 PM HISTORIAS CON HALCONES AT HAWKWATCH INTERNATIONAL
This Latino Conservation Week, bring the whole family to HawkWatch International for Reading with Raptors. We will read a fun book about birds together and meet a live raptor ambassador just like the one in the story! After storytime, you can take photos with the bird, play some fun games, and meet other Spanish-speaking nature lovers. We hope you’ll join us and bring your friends.

2:30-5 PM WASATCH BACK LATINO CONSERVATION CELEBRATION
Join us in celebrating Latino Conservation Week on September 15th from 2:30 to 5:00 PM at Matt Knoop Park in Park City! This family-friendly, free event will feature many activities including delicious food, arts and crafts, face-painting, refreshing paletas, guided nature walks, and exciting games. Discover local conservation efforts through organizations like Swaner Preserve and EcoCenter, Summit Land Conservancy, Recycle Utah, Basin Recreation, Summit County Health Department, Wasatch Mountain Institute, Summit Community Gardens – EATS, and more. Join us for a day of fun and learning as we celebrate our commitment to conservation!

SUWA STEWARDSHIP TRIP – WEST DESERT
Volunteers will camp for 2, 3 or 4 nights (depending on preference) learning about land management on some of Utah’s most beautiful landscapes. Our crew will travel far and wide across the West Desert assessing and remediating vehicle and camping compliance. We will work to protect native vegetation, animal habitat and the ecological integrity of vast landscapes. Tasks will vary by need and may include: sign installation, raking and picking, and team-carrying boulders and trees. There are jobs for all people of all abilities!
To support participation, $450 scholarships are awarded to applicants joining as a part of Latino Conservation Week. Additional gas stipends or carpools will be provided. And all tools, gloves and camping equipment are provided as well.

11AM – 12:30 PM GREENLATINOS ENCUENTRO: WATER EQUITY, PUBLIC LAND & OCEAN PRIORITIES IN THE NEXT PRESIDENTIAL TERM
Join GreenLatinos to prepare and mobilize nuestra comunidad for various 2024 Presidential Election scenarios. At this encuentro, GreenLatinos will report on our public land, water equity and ocean priorities for a Republican or Democrat administration; attendees will be asked to provide feedback, and voice your conservation and nature-defense related priorities in either presidential scenario. The purpose of this encuentro is to identify areas to collaborate during the next presidential term as we strive to secure our environmental liberation. NOTE: GreenLatinos is a 501c3 organization and does not endorse political candidates, or parties. This discussion is strictly for the purpose of education and movement building; we take great care to ensure that we and our members act within the bounds of a 501c3 organization.

5:30-7 PM SABORES DE MI PATRIA: LA COMIDA ES CULTURA
Let’s celebrate the end of the harvest season in community with delicious food! Join us for this year’s third presentation of our Flavors of My Homeland program. Presented in partnership with Artes de México en Utah, this workshop will be entirely in Spanish, with English translation as needed.
The Wasatch Community Gardens’ Campus is located at 629 E 800 S, SLC.

Come and join the fun at our Latino Conservation Festival during Hispanic Heritage Month! Get ready for an exciting day filled with free activities for the whole family. Explore our free resources, get gear for your outdoor adventures, and participate in fun activities. Plus, don’t miss out on the traditional dances that connect us with our rich heritage. This event is completely free and is designed for all ages! Join us to celebrate together our planet and culture!

10AM-3PM ARROYOS y RAICES PARA POLINIZADORES; POLLINATOR PLANTING & RIVERSCAPE RESTORATION
Celebrate Latino Conservation Week with us by planting pollinator-friendly plants at the Galena Soónkahni Nature Preserve near Draper, UT. We’ll meet in the dirt parking area at the gate along Vista Station Blvd (google map link here) before carpooling as a group through locked gates into the preserve.

9 AM HIKE & ASADA IN YOUR PUBLIC LANDS WITH SUWA
Celebrate Latino Conservation Week with a hike and asada in our National Forests! We’ll walk and talk about public lands, current issues and threats, and what we can do to protect them. We’ll also grill up some asada lunch at the end!

Meet at the Brighton Resort parking lot Important reminders: NO DOGS allowed in the canyon. Please bring water, good walking shoes, and appropriate clothing. It may be chilly in the morning, and toastier around noon.
