Black-necked Stilt

Himantopus himantopus mexicanus

 

Diet

Feeds mainly on aquatic invertebrates, occasionally fish, reptiles, and amphibians.

Habitat

Inhabits freshwater and saltwater marshes, rice fields, shallow lagoons, mangrove swamps, and mudflats.

Nesting

Builds a depression nest about 2 inches deep and lines the nest with dry weeds and twigs. Lays 1-5 eggs, and incubation is 21-26 days.

Members of this genus have the second-longest legs in proportion to their bodies of any bird, exceeded only by flamingos.
