Spring in Salt Lake City brings many long-awaiting blooms, but few are as dramatic as the Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis). It is native to the Eastern US, growing as far west as New Mexico, but are popular hardy trees found in landscapes across North America. The tiny rose-pink flowers are cauliflorous, meaning the dense clusters emerge directly from the older woody branches of the tree. Over the summer the flowers turn to pods full of small bean-like seeds, which is fitting as these trees are a member of Fabaceae, the bean family! Check out some of our Redbud trees by the Flamingos, near the Bird Feeder Cafe, and outside the Visitor Center.
