Boat-billed Heron

Cochlearius cochlearius ridgwayi

Diet

Their mostly carnivorous diet will also extend to small rodents, reptiles, eggs of other smaller birds, and various insects and crustaceans.

Habitat

Boat-billed Herons live primarily in mangrove swamps, lowland tropical forests, and seasonal lagoons.

Nesting

Their nests are constructed out of twigs and located in trees or bushes. Females lay 2-4 blueish-white eggs per clutch and incubation takes about 20 days. Chicks remain in the nest for 6-8 weeks.

Their large dark eyes are an indication of their foraging and nocturnal feeding habits, which take place at dusk and early night.
