Diet

Eats small birds and mammals, frogs, and lizards, as well as earthworms, insects, and crayfish.

Habitat

Almost any habitat with sufficient tree cover. Can be found inhabiting farmland, suburban landscapes, and city parks.

Nesting

Nests in cavities, and will readily take to nest boxes. Lays 2-6 eggs with an incubation period of 27-34 days. The female and the chicks depend on food brought by the male.

Did you know?

Due to individual variation, eastern screech owls can be grey or red. Overall, red individuals make up only about one third of the population, though they are more common in the eastern part of their range.
