Red-crested Cardinal

Paroaria coronata

 

Diet

Forages on the ground and in shrubs for seeds, fruits, berries, and insects.

Habitat

Found in semi-open areas with scattered trees and vegetation.

Nesting

The female selects the nest site, and the male builds a cup-shaped nest from twigs and pine needles. Lays 2-4 eggs with a 14 day incubation period. Both parents care for the chicks, but once fledged, the male assumes responsibility for feeding and guarding the young.

Did you know?

The male and female will rarely lose sight of each other and keep in contact by vocalizing.
