Southern Ground Hornbill

Bucorvus leadbeateri

 

Diet

Feeds on fruit, reptiles, frogs, snails, insects, and mammals. To kill live prey, they will vigorously shake it. These hornbills acquire all the water they need from their food.

Habitat

Found in woodlands, savannas, and open grasslands.

Nesting

Nests in the hollow of a tree every two years. Female lays 2 eggs, and generally only one chick is successfully raised every nine years. Incubation is about 45 days.
