Tony - Horticulture Volunteer 🍃
⭐️How long have you been volunteering with Tracy Aviary?
I`ve been volunteering now for a bit over 2 months.
⭐️How do you support the Horticulture department?
By pulling out those invasive species, plants and weeds that smother or use up the water of our native plants. Doing it with no chemicals means a lot to me personally.
⭐️What inspired you to volunteer for Tracy Aviary and what is your favorite thing about volunteering?
I would love to say it was originally my choice to volunteer. In all honesty, it was not. It began as court ordered community service. (hey nobody`s perfect) They set me up at the Nature Center and what was a debt to society has become a hidden blessing. It is now my every intention to continue giving my time to something this special, that we all can share and be a part of.
I love having a chance to reconnect with nature each week alongside new and familiar faces. Hearing the voices of others, equally as passionate, telling stories and sharing ideas, as I`m getting mud on my hands. Feeling the wind, watching the birds and squirrels, even working in the rain. Mash all that together plus the personal healing it brings, that is what I love most about volunteering at the Nature Center.
⭐️What is your favorite spot at the Nature Center at Pia Okwai?
Well nothing beats the view from the observation tower.
⭐️What would you say to others who are thinking about volunteering but are undecided?
Be a part of something bigger than yourself, and find yourself in doing so. I do every weekend.
