Today during National Volunteer Week, we are highlighting Matt, who is a volunteer with our Conservation team. There is a wide variety of projects folks can get involved in through conservation, and our volunteers participate in several of them!

Matt - Conservation Volunteer 🐦‍⬛

⭐️How long have you been volunteering with Tracy Aviary?
4 years
⭐️How do you support the Conservation department?
Alta feeder refills, breeding season surveys, Snowy Plover nest monitor.

⭐️What inspired you to volunteer for Tracy Aviary and what is your favorite thing about volunteering?
During the early days of the pandemic, I was locked in and going crazy. I decided that volunteering at Tracy Aviary was the first thing I was going to do when I was allowed back into the real world. Initially I volunteered in Aviculture, and I met some cool people in birds. I then decided to take a step even further into the real world and started doing conservation volunteering.

Volunteering is a great way for me to contribute to conservation in the community I live in. I've made many good friends through volunteering. I've also learned so much about birds and the environment. OK sorry - that's three things.

⭐️What is your favorite spot at the Nature Center at Pia Okwai?
I love being by the Jordan River when the Bullock's Orioles are in town.

⭐️What would you say to others who are thinking about volunteering but are undecided?
Birds won't hold you to the same exacting standards that people do.
