Happy World Migratory Bird Day! 🌎
Today we celebrate migratory birds as they journey to their nesting sites across the Americas! This year`s theme is “Every Bird Counts – Your Observations Matter” which highlights the role of public participation in collecting data on migratory bird populations and their habitats. 📝
Through community science, people around the world are able to identify factors that impact their populations and contribute to our knowledge about how to protect them. Here at Tracy Aviary, we work with some amazing community scientists who assist us on a variety of projects, such as the Salt Lake Avian Collision Survey (S.L.A.C.S). 🌃
Spotting migratory birds can be very exciting, but sometimes it is seeing them in unfortunate circumstances like window collisions. Since a majority of migratory birds travel at night, light from urban areas can draw birds in and unfortunately cause these collisions. Collecting this data is difficult, but reinforces the need for solutions. Luckily, folks can make windows visible to birds, from installing acopian curtains and bird tape to using bird-friendly glass. 🪟
