Diet

Feeds mainly at night so it is not in competition with other herons. Feeds mainly on fish, but also aquatic insects, lizards, snakes, eggs, carrion, and plants.

Habitat

Lives in fresh or saltwater marshes, wetlands, streams, or lakes.

Nesting

This heron builds a platform nest from sticks lined with grass and roots. It nests with others of its species. Lays 3-6 bluish-green eggs, and incubation is 24-26 days.

Did you know?

Males will establish a territory and perform various mating rituals. Once a pair bond has been formed, both the male’s and female’s legs turn pink.
