Amazonian Motmot

Momotus momota

 

Diet

The motmot uses its saw-edged beak to catch and eat insects and sometimes larger prey, such as frogs and mice. It occasionally eats fruit.

Habitat

Found in a broad range of habitats including lowland, humid, and temperate forests, and scattered woodlands.

Nesting

Lays 3-4 eggs in an underground nest that both the male and female dig. Incubation ranges from 13 days to 3 weeks.

Did you know?

The nest of the motmot can be up to six feet long and up to 14 feet deep.
