Common Peafowl

Diet

The peacock is omnivorous. Selection ranges from grain to green crops to insects, small reptiles, mammals, and even small snakes. However, it prefers berries, drupes, and wild figs.

Habitat

It uses a wide range of habitats including secondary vegetation, orchards, and other cultivation near villages, generally preferring deciduous forests near streams. The species often lives in close proximity to human settlements.

Nesting

The nest is usually concealed in scrub, but sometimes elevated in flood-prone areas. There are usually 3-6 eggs.

The male’s long, brightly-colored feathers and display behaviors are sexually selected for. Females choose mates based on their plumage, with symmetry being important.
