Green-winged Macaw

Ara chloropterus
Also known as: Red-and-green Macaw

 

Diet

Forages in trees for nuts, fruit, berries, seeds, and some greens.

Habitat

Found in tropical forests, mangrove swamps, and savannas, it has one of the largest and broadest ranges of any macaw species.

Nesting

Creates a nest high above the ground in hollow tree trunks or holes in damaged palms. Lays 2-3 eggs with an incubation of about 28 days. Chicks hatch featherless and blind, opening their eyes at around 15 days old. Fledging occurs approximately 90 days after hatching.

In the wild, this macaw often flocks to mountains of clay known as “macaw licks.” Such licks contain minerals and salts essential to the bird’s diet.
