Northern Pintail

Anas acuta

 

Diet

Feeds on seeds, tubers, and other vegetative parts of aquatic grasses and sedges as well as aquatic bugs, crustaceans, and snails.

Habitat

Inhabits shallow freshwater marshes, small lakes, and rivers with dense vegetative cover.

Nesting

Lays 3-12 eggs in a scrape nest lined with vegetation and down; not usually near water. Incubation is 22-24 days and fledging occurs at 40-45 days.
