Wattled Jacana
Jacana jacana
Diet
Feeds on insects, invertebrates, and seeds picked from the floating vegetation and on the water’s surface.
Habitat
Found in shallow freshwater wetlands
Nesting
In an unusual role reversal, male Jacanas do most of the nest building and parental care. A female may choose multiple mates, and will defend the males and nests from other females. Nests are built on floating plants, and are exclusively looked after by the male.
Did you know?
The Jacana’s large feet allows them to walk on floating vegetation. When spread out, a jacana’s toes and claws can cover an area up to 5 by 8 inches!
