Christmas Bird Count for Beginners

Christmas Bird Count for Beginners!

The National Audubon Society’s Christmas Bird Count is the longest running community science project in the nation (more history here). Now, anyone can get in on the fun and contribute data used to monitor and protect birds!

Join us on December 14 from 9 – 11:30am for our FREE Christmas Bird Count for Beginners!

  • Birders of all ages and skill levels are welcome! Our educators will teach you the basics of birdwatching during the program.
  • Children must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Registration is required.
  • Binoculars and bird guides available to check out.
  • Hot chocolate and light snacks will be provided!
  • Participants should dress in warm clothing. We will be outside for most of the program.
  • Please assess the health of everyone in your group before check-in. If you or anyone else planning on attending has any of the following symptoms or risk factors, we kindly ask that you refrain from attending: Fever, cough, new or increased shortness of breath, new decreased sense of smell or taste, sore or scratchy throat, muscle aches and pains, have been in contact or near anyone known to be infected with COVID-19 in the past two weeks.

You may arrive at Tracy Aviary in Liberty park as early as 8:30am for check in. Program orientation will begin promptly at 9am and we will start the count at 9:30am. The count will go from 9:30-11am. At 11am, we will reconvene to warm up and total up our bird sightings! After the count is over, you are free to enjoy the Aviary.
