Nature Notes

Guam Kingfisher

Historically, this species inhabited the island of Guam, but is now extinct in the wild. The Guam kingfisher calls at about the same time every morning with such regularity that, according to local belief, the bird can be used to tell time.

Let's Get Social

Please join us in welcoming our new White Storks! Once grown, these birds will be a part of our Bird Show! You might see them next time you visit Tracy Aviary as their keepers work on acclimating them to their new home!

Tomorrow is National Endangered Species Day, and we want to give a shoutout to The Leonardo and their exhibit, "LOOK At US" with artwork by Scotty Mitchell. Presented in partnership with Ken Sanders Rare Books.

"Wild animals often appear in my dreams..." says Scotty Mitchell. "Sometimes, they are peering out from under foliage along a river. Other times, staring at me in a group, silhouetted against the night sky. I’ve dreamed of birds carrying me aloft, of riding on a tiger’s back, of butterflies alighting on my head, where spiders, worms, and other small insects are nesting in my hair. They have wanted my attention."

And they want yours too.

National Endangered Species Day aims to raise awareness about the growing number of animal species facing extinction and the effects of climate change on ecosystems. It also celebrates species that have recovered from conservation efforts.
