Nature Notes

Kea

Found in the wooded valleys and forests along subalpine scrublands of South Island New Zealand, the kea is known for its intelligence and curiosity. Its playful and mischievous antics have earned it the nickname “clown of the mountains.”

Let's Get Social

Finding a baby bird can be alarming, but that doesn't always mean it needs immediate attention. We created this flowchart to help assess whether it can be left alone, needs some help, or if it requires wildlife rehabilitation.

Thank you for keeping our local wildlife safe and cared for! Please note that Tracy Aviary and the Nature Center at Pia Okwai do not accept injured wildlife.

Our Conservation team has been having a busy MAPS season! 🐦✨

MAPS stands for Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship—a standardized protocol that helps us better understand the breeding success, survival, and behavior of birds across North America. If you’re interested in getting involved with our song bird band efforts, our upcoming trainings are now live - link in our bio!

Here’s a peek at just some of the amazing birds we’ve captured (and released!) over the past two months during our banding sessions:

Left column (top to bottom): Western Tanager, Lark Sparrow

Middle column (top to bottom): Downy Woodpecker, Black-capped Chickadee, MacGillivray’s Warbler

Right column (top to bottom): Cedar Waxwing, Yellow Warbler, Bullock’s Oriole

**These birds were handled for the purpose of scientific research under a federally authorized Bird Banding Permit issued by the U.S. Geological Survey and in accordance with all state permitting requirements.**
