Sun’s out, feathers out! Our Victoria Crowned Pigeons were seen enjoying the sun’s rays in Treasures of the Rainforest. ☀️
Sunbathing is a common practice seen in many bird species, where birds lie on the ground (as seen here) or perched, wings spread wide, taking in the sun.
The Audubon Society notes that there are practical reasons for sunning, such as for warmth and dryness, but more and more research now points to another reason: to rid themselves of parasites living on their skin and feathers.
If you see any of our birds on the ground with their wings spread out, they may be sunbathing! Feel free to check in with our Bird Care staff to verify the behavior if you are still unsure.
