Thunderbird Thursday: August 2020

14.08.2020
Where's Whiner? For the past several months, we have been highlighting the adventures of our southern ground hornbill dynamic duo, Epic and Elle, as they worked through their first breeding season as a couple. While Epic and Elle were exploring nest options and pair-bonding, our older male, Whiner, has been vacationing in the hornbill "backyard" habitat to give our dynamic duo a chance to bond without the older male getting in the middle of things. Now that the breeding season has concluded, Whiner is being introduced back to the main exhibit with Epic and Elle! The family group have been able to see each other, touch, and share food and enrichment thought the entire separation, but we are still taking things slow while reintroducing the group. Say hi to Whiner next time you stop by our southern ground hornbill enclosure! - Primary Aviculturist AllieTracy Aviary memberships are now 35% off! Milford Monday: Inca Bathtime

15.07.2020
Milford here for #MilfordMonday! Splish, splash, Inca is taking a bath! Do you know why birds love to bathe? For birds, it is essential that they keep their feathers in good condition. Bathing is an important part of feather maintenance. Dampening the feathers helps protect against sun damage, loosens the dirt, removes bugs and mites, and makes their feathers easier to preen. You can see Inca, as well as all of my Bird Show friends at our Outdoor Bird Show, every Tuesday-Sunday. Show times change daily, and will be listed online and at the Aviary. https://tracyaviary.org/hours-admis...

Hornbill Shower

02.07.2020
It's bath time with our southern ground hornbill duo, Epic and Elle! Hornbills love all 3 major methods of bathing-sun bathing, dust bathing, and bathing in water. Our group prefer to have water mist down on them, rather than standing and bathing in a pool. We have sprinkler misters set up in their exhibits for them that run a few times per day, but they especially love when it rains. They will stand outside in the rain until they get absolutely drenched, then go inside and dry off in their heated building.#ThunderbirdThursday #EpicAndElle #SouthernGroundHornbill #TracyAviary #MoreThanAnAviary

Bird Show BTS: Owl Eyes

04.06.2020
Meet Tofka, our very handsome milky eagle owl. With one look at Tofka, it's not hard to imagine why most of the questions we get asked about it revolve about those gorgeous, unique-looking eyes of his. If you are interested in learning a little more about Tofka's eyes and the eyes of owls in general... I hope you enjoy this quick overview... and even with the sound off, five minutes gazing into the eyes of this gorgeous creature is five minutes well spent! Trust me.-Helen, Curator of Bird Programs

Bird Show BTS: Cardboard Tube Enrichment

30.04.2020
What's one thing we've all got plenty of at the moment? Well, I won't spoil the surprise... but it's the theme of our enrichment video this morning. With a little imagination, every day items can be converted into enriching additions to our birds' day. Highlight of this video, for me, is Roscoe our roadrunner, so if you don't want to watch the whole thing (although I certainly encourage it, our birds are beautiful), certainly fast-forward and don't miss out on Roscoe's little display!-Helen, Curator of Bird Programs

Bird Show BTS: The Science of Color

04.05.2020
As I am sure you have seen, Tracy Aviary is officially open again as of yesterday... we're easing into it slowly and safely for all, but it's great to welcome guests back again! This will be the last of the daily video segments from our bird show team for a while, as we turn our attention back to live interactions with our guests... but we will still keep you updated on our bird show ambassadors through photos and occasional videos. For today... enjoy our colorful green-winged macaw, Rembrandt, and a little lesson in the science of bird color... and how things may not always be as they seem!-Helen, Curator of Bird Show

Bird Show BTS: Emu Bathtime

04.05.2020
Today, right now in fact, is our first official day open again to the general public... while we have some restrictions on capacity to make sure everyone is staying safe, we're very excited to welcome as many people as possible back into our beautiful, bird-filled oasis! We've enjoyed sharing birds with you all virtually, but we can't wait to share them in person! Today, a very special treat though - whether or not you actually visit Tracy Aviary, this is not something most people see - we're right behind-the-scenes, taking a peek at our biggest bird show star... Sydney our emu... splish, splash he's taking a bath! Enjoy this... I know we always do!-Helen, Curator of Bird Programs

Bird Show BTS: Up Close with Rafiki

01.05.2020
Get as up-close as I do this morning with our handsome Northern ground hornbill, the Great Rafiki! It would not be disingenous of me to say this big, loveable guy is one of my best friends. A huge bird, with an even more huge personality, just an incredible individual. Hope you enjoy seeing his handsome mug up-close-and-personal, learning a little about the precious relastionships we have with our birds here at Tracy Aviary, and a little about why he looks the way he does (handsome!!!)-Helen, Curator of Bird Programs

Bird Show BTS: Meet Rembrandt

29.04.2020
Out with our (my favorite) macaw, Rembrandt this morning and he decided to give a PERFECT demonstration of the destructive power of a macaw beak... so I decided to take his lead, whipped out my phone and captured this. Some great up-close footage of just how amazing and impressive those beaks are as well as just how handsome and impressive Rembrandt himself is! And a little bit of information for you about that awesome beak. Enjoy!-Helen, Curator of Bird Programs

Bird Show BTS: Meet Aurora

28.04.2020
Part two on our quick peek at the two distinct families of owls. If you tuned in yesterday, you already met a member of the true/typical owl family (to be accurate, Strigidae) and today we meet one of the world's most beautiful owls, in my opinion from the other family of owls, barn owls (Tytonidae). Personally, while I think all owls are beautiful, there is something magical and otherworldly about barn owls - they always take my breath away, especially in flight, but none moreso than our lovely, Aurora. Enjoy!-Helen, Curator of Bird Programs

Bird Show BTS: Meet Barney

28.04.2020
Whoooo-who-who doesn't love owls? One of the most universally popular groups of birds. for sure. The 220 or so owl species in the world are split into two families - true/typical owls and barn owls. I'd intended to have one video here to show a representative from each family, but ultimately split it into a two parter... so be sure to tune in tomorrow to see part 2 (featuring my favorite owl species and favorite individual owl). But for today. meet our true/typical owl representative, Barney, our oh-so handsome great horned owl... and owls don't come any more typical or classic than this gorgeous guy!-Helen, Curator of Bird Programs
